Week 1 kindness challenge: the environment

100 acts of kindness week 1The Week 1 challenge on Toddler Approved’s month-long kindness project is to be kind to our environment.  This ties in nicely with tomorrow’s holiday of Tu B’Shevat, which is sort of a Jewish Arbor Day.  A key principle of Tu B’Shevat is that we were given the earth to care for it and protect it (certainly not destroy it), we are in partnership with God in tending it.  We will be going to our Arboretum and Nature Center‘s Arbor Day celebration to plant pine seedlings, play, and listen to music.

So join in with us! Pick up litter, plant a tree, feed the birds.  Megan of Coffee Cups and Crayons gives two cute ideas for creating bird feeders with kids.  My daughter and I decided to try the cookie cutter bird feeders.

What a sticky mess! We mixed up the few ingredients (going heavy on the corn syrup) and  molded them into the cookie cutters that my daughter wanted to use.

I can’t emphasize enough that they need to dry overnight.  I was overly eager to take them out because I wanted to run this post on Wednesday and a couple crumbled in my hands.  I had to just wait.  When we hung them up, we were thrilled with how they turned out.

It was fun for my daughter to do a quick project from start to finish with me.  All that was left was to wait to catch some customers!
